The purpose of thisstudy was to investigate whether there is an association between theparental perception on the nutritional status of their children and thechildren’s BMI. Overweight schoolchildren from two municipalschools in the city of Petrolina and their mothers were invited toparticipate in this study. Weight and height anthropometric measureswere taken, in addition to applying a questionnaire in order to assessthe parental perception on the nutritional status of their children. Theschools were randomized and divided into the Experimental Groupand Control Group. The children and mothers from the ExperimentalGroup were submitted to 10 wks of multidisciplinary intervention withphysical activities, nutritional guidance, and behavioral therapy. TheControl schoolchildren and mothers followed their usual routine. Thestatistical analysis was carried out by using the Kappa statistic. Noassociations were found at the onset of the intervention in any of theanalyzed groups. However, the perception of the parents from theControl Group on the nutritional status of their children became evenmore distorted at the end. It was concluded that the intervention hada protective effect on the perception of the children’s parents of theExperimental Group.
