ClinicalMenstrual Dysfunction Is Associated with Low Energy Availability butNot Dyslipidemia in Division I Female Endurance Runners.JEPonline 2018;21(2):265-276. The purpose of this study was todetermine the prevalence of low energy availability (EA) and clinicalmenstrual dysfunction (MD) in collegiate female endurance runners, identify associated health and performance characteristics, andevaluate the LEAF-Q as a screening tool in this population. Thesubjects were female NCAA Division I Student-Athletes (N=15)participating in track and field events with a distance of 800 m to 10K. EA was calculated using 3-d diet records, accelerometers, andheart rate monitors. Maximal oxygen uptake (VO2 max) and restingenergy expenditure were measured via indirect calorimetry. Fortypercent of the athletes’ reported current clinical MD (EA 28.7 ± 7.5kcal·kg-1· FFM). Sixty percent of the athletes reported regular orsubclinical menstrual status (EA 31.0 ± 7.6 kcal·kg-1·FFM). LEAF-Qeffectively identified individuals with current or history of clinical MDat risk for low EA. There was no significant difference in blood lipidsbetween athletes with clinical or subclinical MD. The EA threshold<30 kcal·kg-1·FFM·d-1did differentiate clinical MD from regular andsubclinical in free living conditions, though there was not a significantdifference in EA between groups (P=0.59). Menstrual status was notassociated with dyslipidemia.
