JEPonline 2018;21(3):171-182. This study examined theallometric relations between an individual’s lower limb musclestrength (S) and his or her performance in physical capability tests.Twenty-four recreational runners (12 males, age: 31 ± 7 yrs, mass:78.5 ± 11.2 kg; 12 females, age: 31 ± 6 yrs, mass: 56.5 ± 4.4 kg)performed an isometric maximal voluntary quadriceps contraction, two plyometric tests, an agility test, a submaximal treadmill and 5 kmtrial tests. The specific allometric exponents were determined fortorque and force, assuming the relation S = k.mb(male, b = 0.56 and0.55; female, b = 0.48 and 0.50, respectively). Stronger relationswere observed between dynamic S and the performance inplyometric (squat jumps – SJ, male, r = 0.70 and 0.80, female, r =0.72 and 0.74; counter movement jumps – CMJ, male, r = 0.70 and0.76, female, r = 0.62 and 0.63, traditional and allometricnormalization of S, respectively) and agility tests (SJ, male, r = 0.62and 0.74, female, r = 0.65 and 0.66; CMJ, male, r = 0.53 and 0.66,female, r = 0.62 and 0.63) when S was normalized allometricallydemonstrating that individual morphological aspects are majordeterminants of motor performance. The allometric scaling methodcan be employed to adjust S for body size and predict the physicalcapabilities of recreational runners based on individual physiologicaland biomechanical parameters.
