Acute Cardiopulmonary Responses ofWomen during Exercises of Localized Muscular Resistance andAerobic Exercises in the Same Energy Demand. JEPonline 2018;21(4):123-133. The aim of this study was to compare the differences inacute cardiopulmonary responses between the localized muscularresistance (LMR) exercises and the aerobic exercises performed inthe same energy demand in young women. Nine healthy women(with a mean age of 22.33 ± 3.57 yrs; weight, 63.26 ± 7.46 kg;height, 1.67 ± 0.07 m; and body mass index of 22.71 ± 1.37 kg·m-2)were enrolled. Protocol consisted of a maximum cardiopulmonarytest and a maximum repetition test with a 24-hr interval. After 48 to96 hrs, they performed LMR exercises with 25 to 30 reps in thebench press, free squatting, and arm curl with a constant recordingof cardiorespiratory variables and heart rate. After 48 to 72 hrs theaerobic exercise was performed. It consisted of treadmill walking for20 min at the same oxygen uptake (VO2) as the LMR exercises. TheLMR exercise obtained higher values for heart rate (HR) andpulmonary ventilation (VE) than the aerobic exercise, respectively,129.01 ± 10.93 beats·min-1and 94.13 ± 7.48 beats·min-1(P<0.01)and 22.5 ± 4.01 L·min-1and 15.58 ± 2.48 L·min-1(P≤0.05). It wasconcluded that the LMR exercises resulted in greater chronotropicand ventilatory responses at the same aerobic energy demand, although with an insufficient overload to generate improvement inthe subjects’ cardiorespiratory fitness.
