摘要：AbstractEmployability and Higher Education have a special relationship today. For the majority of people it is a natural relationship: Higher Education, for many reasons, is the kind of education that facilitates and enhances the performance of highly skilled jobs, and in one way or another, must ensure employability for those who embark on it. Seen this way, it is good that many studies and proposals are trying to optimize this relationship, to correlate both issues in the best possible way. However, for other individuals, Higher Education has little to do with employability and it is not one of its main goals, but goes in another direction. This leads to the following question: Is employability the be all and the end all of Higher Education? The answer to this is important, since it appears to be at the root of the matter and could determine the future of Higher Education. The question is approached with two objectives in mind: firstly, to delve into the different ways of approaching the subject, and the various conceptions arising from combining employability and university education; and secondly, to offer a consensual way of thinking about this important issue in the future.

Para algunos, una importante mayoría, no podría ser de otra manera: la Educación Superior, por muchas razones, es el tipo de educación que facilita y favorece el desempeño de empleos altamente cualificados, y de una manera o de otra, debe garantizar la empleabilidad de los que se embarcan en ella. Visto así, es bueno que numerosos estudios y propuestas estén tratando de optimizar dicha relación, de lograr que ambas cuestiones correlacionen de la mejor manera posible. Para otros en cambio, la Educación Superior, tiene poco que ver con la empleabilidad, anda por otros derroteros, o por lo menos, no es ésta una de sus metas principales. Todo ello nos conduce a la siguiente cuestión: ¿es la empleabilidad un fin de la Educación Superior? La respuesta que pueda darse a esta pregunta no es baladí, sino que parece estar en la raíz del asunto, y podría determinar lo que acabe aconteciendo con dicha educación. La presente comunicación aborda la última pregunta apuntada con un doble objetivo. Por un lado, ahondar en las diferentes maneras de encarar el tema, en las diversas concepciones que existen cuando empleabilidad y educación universitaria se ponen en relación; y por otro lado, ofrecer una prospectiva, una manera consensuada de pensar en tan relevante asunto.
