In the ruins of Pompeii for instance,advertisements hawking the services ofprostitutes were carved into the buriedstonework of this thriving Roman citybefore it was destroyed in 79 CE.1 In medieval Europe, town criers roamed thestreets making public announcementsaccompanied by the ringing of a hand bell.In China, one of the earliest advertisingartefacts discovered was a printing blockof an advertisement for a needle shop inJinan, Shandong province, dating from theNorthern Song Dynasty (960–1127 CE).
