摘要:Excessive alcohol consumption by college students is beingrecognized more and more, and its negative effects justify theimplementation of prevention programs. Positive expectanciesof alcohol are frequently acquired in adolescence and assume animportant role in young-adult consumption patterns. This paperdescribes validation of the brief version of the AlcoholExpectancy-Adolescent Questionnaire (AEQ-AB) carried out witha sample of 317 freshman-year college students at a publicPortuguese University. Results of confirmatory factor analysis, invariance and internal consistency showed some difficulties inthe internal structure of the questionnaire. The two-factor modeldid not fit because no factor emerged to represent the negativeexpectation items. A single-factor structure was assumed and itsinvariance by gender was confirmed, as well as good internalconsistency. The validity criterion showed positive and negativecorrelations with several variables depending on whether theywere positively or negatively related to alcohol consumption. Theoldest students and students drinking alcohol from early ageshad the lowest expectancy of positive effects of the use ofalcohol. With regard to academic performance, freshmen with ahigh GPA showed strong expectancies for the positive effects ofalcohol. Positive correlations have been observed betweenpositive alcohol expectancy and consumption levels. Furtherstudies are necessary to include a negative dimension in themeasure of expectancies of alcohol consumption.
