摘要:The Department of Modern Languages and Classics at Saint Mary’sUniversity will be offering a field school in the territories of Genzano diLucania and Banzi, Basilicata, Italy. The field school will allowstudents to participate in an ongoing archaeological research project,(the Basentello Valley Archaeological Research Project: BVARP),focused on the reconstruction of settlement patterns in the BasentelloRiver Valley of Basilicata for the purpose of understanding better thecultural interaction between pre-Roman indigenous peoples andRoman migrants and settlers. Students will learn the basic techniquesof archaeological field survey, finds processing and analysis,environmental archaeology, photography, drawing, mapping, anddata entry. Students will also be able to participate in archaeologicalexcavations at the early imperial villa site of San Felice and, possibly,in the excavation of a second century AD cemetery at the site ofVagnari. Students will work 5 days a week on site and will have theirweekends free to visit nearby archaeological and touristic sites suchas Venosa, Lecce, Bari, Matera, Metapontum, the Gargano Peninsula,and Trani, or to participate in organized field trips to sites in the region.There will be one long weekend in the middle of the field schoolduring which time students will be given a guided tour of the site ofPompeii.
