摘要：This volume, edited by the Chair of the QuaternarySubcommission of the German Stratigraphical Com-mission, presents major stratotypes and stratigraphi-cal terms for the Quaternary both in northernGermany, covered by the Scandinavian glaciations,and in southern Germany, in the Alpine foreland. Itconsist of 6 chapters prepared by 11 authors.The Preface and the short opening chapter TheQuaternary as a chronostratigraphical unit, by Th.Litt, present the basic assumptions of the Quaternaryclimatostratigraphic subdivision (into glaciations andinterglacials), based on climatic oscillations of theQuaternary period.Also presented are the decisions ofthe INQUACommission for Quaternary Stratigraphyon the Pliocene/Pleistocene boundary and the subdi-vision of the Pleistocene (into Lower, Middle andUpper).
