摘要:Over the past century, the creation of nitrogenous ferti-lizer has sustained food production and thereby theglobal population. Nevertheless, all the nitrogen usedin food production is added to the environment, as is thenitrogen emitted to the atmosphere during fossil-fuelcombustion (Gruber and Galloway 2008). Of particularconcern is the consequence of large reactive nitrogenleaking from the ‘nitrogen cascade’, especially ammoniaand nitrogen oxides, which can first cause air pollutionand then, after it has been transported to remote areasand deposited on the ground, lead to soil acidification, water eutrophication and biodiversity loss (Gallowayet al. 2003). This special issue presents a selection of 13papers that advance our understanding of cascadingconsequences of reactive nitrogen species along theiremission, transport, deposition, and the impacts in theatmosphere.
