摘要:Ultrafiltration technology has been widely used in the purification of secondary effluent when water reuse is intended. The biological pollution caused by biofilm formation on membrane surface is considered to be the most serious problem in membrane process.Biofilm control based on traditional biocides may contribute to the development of bacterial resistance.Vanillin is a potent small-molecule inhibitor of biofilm growth based on quorum sensing inhibition. Results showed that the flux of ultrafiltration membrane increased by 43% in the presence of 100 mg/L vanillin after 12-h filtration, resulting from a porous and thinner fouling layer on the membrane surface.Vanillin worked on biofilms and biofouling through inhibition of AHL expression of microorganisms rather than a microbicidal mechanism. The concentration of pollutants on the membrane surface was soluble microbial by-product>humic acids>pro-teins,and biological pollution played the most important role in membrane pollution.Soluble microbial metabolites were obviously lower in the presence of vanillin.Overall, vanillin provided a new strategy against membrane biofouling during ultrafiltration of secondary effluent.
