Higher Screen Time and Lower Physical Activity in Adolescent Boys than in Adolescent Girls. JEPonline 2019;22(4):58-67. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the frequency of sedentary behavior (SB) and physical activity (PA) levels of a Brazilian adolescent population. The study included 806 adolescents between 10 and 17 yrs of age (326 boys and 480 girls). Body mass index (BMI), BMI-z, waist circumference (WC), and waist-to-height ratio (WHtR) were calculated. SB time and the PA level were verified by questionnaire and recall of energy expenditure, respectively. The average age of the adolescents was 14.11 ± 1.53 yrs. Values of body mass, height, WC, and BMI were different between the sexes. 5.8% of the adolescents performed vigorous intensity PA of which the difference between the sexes was significant. From the results evaluated in this study, it was clear that the average screen time spent by boys was significantly higher (>2 hr∙d-1 ) compared to girls. When the subjects were classified as to the amount of time spent in sedentary activities, 30.5% of the girls and 50.6% of the boys spent more than 4 hr∙d-1 in front of the screen. In conclusion, the findings in this study indicate a high frequency of physical inactivity and time of exposure to the screen in a population of Brazilian adolescents.
