Maturational State and Chronological Age do not Influence Maximal Oxygen Consumption and Basal Metabolic Rate Responses after Multidisciplinary Intervention in Obese Girls. JEPonline 2019;22(5): 73-88. This study examined the effects of a 12-wk intervention on basal metabolic rate (BMR), body composition, and aerobic fitness in obese girls. Anthropometrical measures, menarcheal status, direct peak oxygen uptake (VO2 max), BMR, and body composition were assessed. After 12-wks, the subjects decreased their weight, BMI Z-score, waist circumference (WC), fat mass, and increased height and VO2 max. There was a decrease in BMR. Differences in change rates were related to age and maturity status for height, BMI, BMI Z-score, and fat-free mass. The interaction term between menarcheal status and changes trajectories significantly predicted height, weight, WC, and BMI. Variability in age and menarcheal status do need to be considered when interpreting training induced changes in body size and composition in obese girls, but do not appear to influence BMR and VO2 max.
