Does Low Handgrip Strength Associate with Poor Cardiometabolic Parameters in Elderly People? JEPonline 2019;22(7):42-51. The aim of this study was to investigate the association between low handgrip strength and blood pressure and blood lipid profile in elderly people. Data from 707 Brazilian elderly people aged 60 yrs and over were collected from January to December 2016. Participants attended to Hospital Israelita Albert Einstein and received anthropometric evaluation that included blood pressure, handgrip strength, and blood analysis. The Odd Ratio (OR) analysis showed a significant association between low handgrip strength and change in Low Density Lipoprotein Cholesterol (LDL-C) in elderly of both sexes (OR = 3.06CI 95% 1.08 to 8.72). When adjusted to sex, low handgrip strength did not show associationwith any other blood and pressure parameters. When adjusted to age, low handgrip strengthwas associated with higher levels of Total Cholesterol (OR = 2.00; CI 95% = 1.29 to 3.10)and Triglycerides (OR = 1.29; CI 95% = 1.01 to 1.67) in the elderly aged 80 or over. In thisway, handgrip strength evaluation may be considered a low cost and simple strategy as apreventive evaluation of cardiovascular risk in this population.
