The Morphofunctional Adaptations of Resistance Exercise on Reducing Cardiovascular Risk Factors in Adolescents: A Systematic Review (2012 to 2018). JEPonline 2019;22(7):1- 21. Incidence of cardiovascular diseases has increased over the last few decades, which has also included children and adolescents. Many studies have indicated that physical activity can be beneficial in the prevention and/or treatment of cardiovascular diseases. The present study is a systematic review of the influences and morphofunctional adaptations promoted by resistance exercise (i.e., strength training) on cardiovascular risk factors in adolescents. Specific descriptors identified articles from 2012 to 2018 from the following databases: (a) Scientific Electronic Library Online (SciELO); (b) PubMed; (c) Latin American;(d) Caribbean literature in health science (Lilacs); and (e) CAPES/BRAZIL. Cross-sectionalinvestigations, randomized, non-randomized and randomized controlled trials, controlled fieldstudies and systematic reviews were included in the present study. Out of a total of 275articles identified, 14 met the inclusion criteria for this review. After analysis, we observed thatresistance exercise training improved the following parameters in adolescents: (a)hypertension; (b) heart rate; (c) waist circumference; (d) LDL levels; (e) total cholesterol; and(f) triglycerides. The findings indicate that resistance exercise training promotes beneficialadjustments of the cardiovascular parameters involved in the improvement of health statusand quality of life. However, it is important to point out that other variables (such as foodintake, sexual hormones, socioeconomic level, smoking, sedentary lifestyle, and insulinresistance) remain to be analyzed in this population.
