Although aging can lead to several diseases(including the risk of heart failure, myocardial infarction, andarterial stiffness) and related mortality, there are others factorsthat may also influence cardiovascular health in elderly adults. For example, there are climate and environmental concerns, vulnerabilities, socioeconomic conditions, discrimination, andracism. However, the primary concern is that the elderly adultsspend the majority of their waking hours in sedentary behaviorsthat can lead to the risk of coronary artery disease and othercardiovascular events. Despite the benefits of physical activityand/or physical exercises, it is clear that a very small percent ofthe elderly adults adopt a physically active lifestyle. This is asignificant health problem since the beneficial effects of exerciseas medicine are considered a non-pharmacological intervention, and at times superior to drug intervention in preventing and evenmitigating the effects of cardiovascular risk factors and otherdiseases associated with aging. Hence, it is essential that healthcare professionals consider the adults’ social conditions to betterunderstand the socially-related determinants of cardiac functionand how different diseases interfere with regular exercise.
