摘要:This work analyses the history of Instituto Sete de Setembro (ISS) ans its Children’s Biology Laboratory (LBI) in the 1930’s. Located in Rio de Janeiro, capital of the Republic, the ISS favored the use of forensic examinations to identify the biological traits of child criminality. It originated from an institution that served as shelter for abandoned children. The ISS acted, initially, as a temporary establishment to shelter the children conducted to other recovery houses and had the incumbency to carry out the classification of minors conducted by the police. The LBI was in charge of making examinations, which included forensic and anthropological components, and prepare opinions for assessment by the Juvenile Court. It is argued that, through a historical analysis of these institutions, it is possible to better understand the emergence of public policies directed to childhood in the 1930’s in Brazil.
