摘要:In the morning of July 24, 1842 a serious conflict happened in the lands of Jiquiá Mill, located in Afogados, between the patrol of national guards and dozens of enslaved that belonged to Manoel Cavalcante de Albuquerque e Melo, owner of the mill. From the confront, two guards were seriously wounded and the rest had “small bruises”. Based on empirical research carried out on handwritten and printed documents of the time, this article aims to remember this unusual event and to discuss several aspects related to Recife Society from 19th century such as: the intricate local political relations, the symbolic measurement of freedom through the skin color and, mainly, the precariousness of the existing police apparatus in the province of Pernambuco.
