摘要：The railways built in Brazil had a significant impact on the sprawl of urban centers, growth of cities and boost in the local economy. While in some cities the development flourished, others lost their infrastructure after the railway system started to collapse. In this regard, the aim of this article is to make a comparative analysis of the intra-urban space sprawl process and organization induced by the railway implementation in the cities of Araraquara/SP and Campina Grande/PB. Even though they are located in different regions of the Brazilian territory, the analysis demonstrates that the growth process of these cities are representative of the types of cities that had agriculture production as the main attractor of the railway at the same time as they had the “Boca de Sertão” status. The presence of the railway allowed these cities to have a huge dynamic which is reflected directly in the sprawl of the intra-urban space.
