摘要：O Theatro Municipal de São João da Boa Vista, inaugurado em outubro de 1914, é a mais longeva testemunha do período de intensas modificações urbanas, políticas, econômicas, sociais e culturais pelo qual a cidade passou no início do século XX. Nesse aspecto, o presente artigo visa relacionar a materialidade daquele edifício teatral com os significados intrínsecos de sua estrutura, que simbolizava a modernidade, a civilidade e o cosmopolitismo, valores basilares do discurso da elite sanjoanense da época. Esses valores simbólicos foram incorporados ao edifício através das técnicas de sua construção, dos materiais utilizados, da sua disposição interna e dos estilos adotados, sendo o Theatro Municipal peça-chave para compreendermos aquela sociedade do início do século XX.
其他摘要：The Theatro Municipal de São João da Boa Vista, inaugurated in October 1914, is the longest witness of the period of intense urban, political, economic, social and cultural changes that the city underwent in the early twentieth century. In this aspect, the present article aims to relate the materiality of that theatrical building with the intrinsic meanings of its structure, which symbolized modernity, civility, and cosmopolitanism, basic values of the discourse of the Sanjoan elite of the time. These symbolic values were incorporated into the building through its construction techniques, the materials used, its internal layout, and the styles adopted, and Theatro Municipal is a key piece to understand the society of the early twentieth century.
