摘要:Phytotherapy corresponds to a branch of medical research that aims to analyze the effectiveness of using “medicinal plants, vegetable drugs and preparations” for the treatment of illnesses. In general, under the scope of dentistry, the use of herbal medicines has been reported with therapeutic functions. The study of the theme is justified and shows itself relevant due to the low occurrence of research, in the nature of a review, that turns to study the evidence on the use of phytotherapy to support the treatment of dental and oral pathologies. Furthermore, the dissemination of these results can help the community of dentistry professionals to become aware of the benefits of using such drugs, which could expand the practice of dispensing. Thus, the research proposes to carry out a literature review on herbal medicines of interest to dentistry and its practical application. To this end, a literature review was carried out with articles published in the Scientific Eletronic Library Online (Scielo), Literatura Latino-Americana e do Caribe em Ciências da Saúde (Lilacs), Medical Literature Analysis and Retrieval System Online (Medline), Biblioteca Brasileira de Odontologia (BBO) e Plataforma Capes, between the months of May and October 2020. From the review of literature carried out, considering twelve herbal medicines, namely: rosemary, aloe vera, marigold, chamomile, lemongrass, copaiba, clove, mallow, papain, pomegranate, tanning and cat's claw, it was glimpsed that these have therapeutic action backed by numerous scientific researches developed in the last decades, representing a therapeutic option for Dentistry, with anti-inflammatory, antibacterial, antiseptic, healing, analgesic and antifungal action.
