摘要:COVID-19 is considered an infectious pathology caused by severe acute respiratory syndrome. Its main route of transmission is through the inhalation of saliva droplets and contaminated respiratory secretions, in addition to presenting several complications related to the stomatognathic system, as well as the presence of anosmia and dysgeusia. In view of this, the aim of this study was to discuss the role of the dentist working in intensive care units on the front line against COVID-19. As for the methodology used, it consists of a review of narrative literature, by searching the PUBMED, Academic Google, LILACS, Medline and Science databases. It has been observed that elderly individuals or individuals with severe medical problems, such as chronic lung disease, diabetes and heart problems, are more likely to develop serious illnesses due to infection by the new coronavirus; while poor oral health is capable of further debilitating this patient. It was found that the introduction of dentists brought several benefits related to the maintenance of the patient's oral health, benefits related to general health, with prevention and treatment of opportunistic infections and a reduction in the length of hospital stay of patients, as cases of bacteremia and pneumonia nosocomial disorders are also associated with microbiota dysregulation in the oral cavity.
