摘要：This review presents the different methods of evaluation of pastures, based on direct and indirect methods. Tropical pasture is the main source of food for cattle in Brazil, however, incorrect management can cause damage to the production system. Therefore, the knowledge of forage mass production, its variation during the year and the spatial distribution of forage biomass is essential for decisions regarding the correct management of pastures. Biomass evaluation can be carried out through the direct or indirect method; however the chosen method must accurately represent the conditions of the pasture, with low operating cost and high precision. There is no perfect method, one can choose the one that best fits the reality in each property and provides adequate forage availability estimates to guide pasture management.
