Methods: It is, therefore, an ecological and retrospective study, with a quantitative approach, with public domain data from the IT department of the Unified Health System (DATASUS) on visceral and cutaneous leishmaniasis in the state of Piauí. For data collection, the following variables were considered: sex, age, health region and race / ethnicity. In this study, aspects related to the etiology, prophylaxis, therapy and control of the disease are discussed, as well as the factors that hinder the implementation of interventionist measures. Final considerations: It was concluded that it is necessary to establish public policies to combat fundamental diseases, applying them to envision the systematization of health services, the promotion of health education, as well as vector control, given the rates of involvement and the hospital expenses generated for hospitalizations.
