摘要:To evaluate the level of knowledge of men over 50 years of age about prostate cancer, radical prostatectomy, and the role of the physical therapist in this context. This is a field, evaluative, exploratory, descriptive, and quantitative research. We evaluated 81 men, aged over 50 years, living in the city of Parnaíba/PI, using a structured questionnaire on the subject. The data were tabulated and analyzed using the Statistical Package for the Social Sciences - SPSS, for later discussion of the findings based on the literature on the subject. The median age was 63 years and it was found that men had little previous knowledge about prostate cancer, so that 97.5% have heard about prostate cancer, but 54.3% do not know how to prevent it and 58% are unaware of the symptoms of this type of cancer. About radical prostatectomy, 85.2% do not know what it is, and most of them have never been diagnosed with cancer nor had this procedure done (96.3). As for the role of the physiotherapist, 59.3% consider it important in the process of dissemination, diagnosis, treatment and rehabilitation of prostate cancer. The knowledge about the subject needs to be deepened and the role of physiotherapy strengthened in this process. Therefore, it was found the need for the expansion and implementation of preventive actions aimed at improving the assistance to the integral health of men, emphasizing health education and disease prevention.
