摘要:Objective: To analyze the consistency of the records present in the declarations and investigation forms of infant and fetal deaths, in the Mortality Information System, in the Municipal Health Department of Caicó, State of Rio Grande do Norte, Brazil. Method: This is a descriptive, quantitative study, which used secondary data on infant and fetal deaths (n=58), from the municipal death surveillance sector and notified and investigated in the Mortality Information System in the period from 2010 to 2015. Data were analyzed by absolute and relative frequencies using the Statistical Package for the Social Sciences version 22.0 statistical software. Results: It was evidenced that 75.7% of fetal cases and 92% of infant cases analyzed presented factors that compromised their consistency. In general, the study pointed out the fragility of death surveillance in the municipality, especially in the context of closing investigations. Conclusion: The study revealed high inconsistency of the investigation records of infant and fetal deaths. It is necessary to recognize the relevance of the investigation for the knowledge of infant and fetal deaths as an important tool for management in decision making and monitoring of infant mortality. Thus, it is necessary to strengthen the role of the mortality committee in the investigation and mobilization of managers and health teams to overcome the problems identified.
