  • 摘要:Metabolic syndrome (MS) is a set of chronic and complex clinical manifestations that has a high prevalence in the elderly, leading them to use multiple drugs and making them more susceptible to the appearance of potential drug interactions (PMI). This study aimed to estimate the prevalence and factors associated with potential drug interactions in elderly people diagnosed with metabolic syndrome. This is a cross-sectional, population-based and household study carried out with 118 elderly people with a confirmed diagnosis of MS, according to criteria of the National Cholesterol Education Program's – Adult Treatment Panel III; IMPs were identified using the Medscape program. Descriptive and bivariate data analysis was performed using SPSS v.21 software. The association between the variables was evaluated using the chi-square test, adopting a significance level of p<0.05. The prevalence of PIM was 27.1% and was significantly associated with the use of health services (p=0.04), with the diagnostic criteria for MS (p=0.05) and with tobacco use (p =0.03). A total of 145 IMPs were obtained, with an average of 4.5 per patient. As for the classification of severity, 76.6% of the IMPs needed monitoring; 13.2% were classified as minor and 10.2% as severe. It is concluded that elderly people with MS had a considerable prevalence of PID, which was associated with the use of health services, the criteria for diagnosing MS and tobacco use. The need for monitoring these elderly people by the health team, especially by the pharmacist, is suggested.
