  • 摘要:Background: Diabetes mellitus (DM) is a prevalent disease that represents one of the great challenges for public health. The use of medicinal plants has been used in the control of diabetes such as Persea americana. Thus, this work aims to collect scientific knowledge about the plant species P. americana in the control of DM through a systematic review. Methods: This is a systematic review of in vivo and in vitro studies, according to the recommendations of the PRISMA protocol, in the following steps: 1) elaboration of the guiding question occurred from the acronym PICO (P - Population and/or Problem, I - Intervention, C - Comparison and O - Outcome/outcomes) with definition of descriptors; 2) sampling (selection of articles) following inclusion/exclusion criteria; 3) search for articles in Scopus, PubMed/MEDLINE and VHL (BIREME) databases; 4) sampling (selection of articles); 5) definition of the information to be extracted from the reviewed works; 6) synthesis of knowledge evidenced in the analyzed articles. Results: Of the 12 articles selected, eight were experimental in vivo studies and 4 were experimental in vitro studies. Diabetic animal models such as Goto-Kakizaki rats and models induced with streptozocin and alloxan were used. The studies showed a reduction in glycemia with the use of P. americana extracts through different pathophysiological pathways. Conclusion: P. americana can contribute to the reduction of DM control and may be a precursor of new substances with pharmacological activity and defined as a great potential for transforming a future antidiabetic drug.
