摘要：Introduction: the abuse of alcoholic beverages is among the biggest health problems worldwide, in the social and financial aspect, due to the high cost of medical care and the loss in productivity due to mortality and premature death, in addition to alcohol dependence increasing the risk for family disorders. Objective: to lecture about the organic, social, sanitary and financial impacts of Brazil related to chronic alcoholism. Methodology: this is an integrative literature review. The research was carried out through online access to the National Library of Medicine (PubMed MEDLINE), Scientific Electronic Library Online (Scielo), Cochrane Database of Systematic Reviews (CDSR), Google Scholar, Virtual Health Library (BVS) and EBSCO databases. Information Services. Results and discussion: the abusive and/or inappropriate consumption of this substance can lead to serious consequences, both at an organic, psychological, social and financial level. Among them are the occurrence of injuries from external causes, especially accidents or violence, health problems, comorbidities, hospitalizations resulting from drug use, hospitalizations in general clinic psychiatric problems, as well as expenses with medication, psychological care, reduction/loss of patient productivity as a function of illness, physical disability, which may be temporary or permanent, and costs related to early mortality. Final considerations: combining economic analysis with scientific studies on alcohol abuse is relevant and necessary, as the consequences of the misuse of this substance are discussed beyond just those related to the harm to the health of abusive individuals; it also refers to the consequences of public impact.
