摘要:This work presents results of research carried out to discuss the barriers to entry and permanence in the Music bachelor degree at the Federal University of Rio Grande do Sul (UFRGS). The research had a qualitative approach and involved the application of a questionnaire to students enrolled in graduation and the realization of six interviews with subjects who tried to enter and/or entered the course. The study aimed to analyze how students understand and face barriers to entry and permanence in the course, which are analyzed under the Conservatorial Habitus category. The choice of this theoretical framework allows us to identify the mechanisms by which elitism is perpetuated and naturalized among students, teachers and aspirants. Finally, the text discusses the contradictory condition of the public university, present in this course, in which processes of social inclusion and exclusion coexist simultaneously. The research is justified by the need to update the debate on the historical elitism of the university institution in face of recent public policies that have sought to confront it.
