摘要:Introduction : Dental curing light is a dental equipment which is used mostly in polymerising light cure resin based composites used in composite tooth restorations. They can be also used on several materials which can be cured using a light cure. The term “blue light hazard” has recently gained attention. Recent findings regarding the harmful effects of light cure is that the blue light generates reactive oxygen species (ROS) which induces oxidative stress in the oral tissue thereby causing ROS induced phototoxicity. This study aims at assessing the knowledge and awareness on the harmful effects of curing light during dental procedures among dental college students. Materials and methods : A questionnaire was distributed through an online google forms link to about 100 people studying in dental college. The results were collected, statistical tests such as descriptive statistics and Chi square tests were conducted. The data was analysed using SPSS version 20 and the results are represented in pie charts and bar diagrams. Results and Discussion : The correlation between year of study and the average exposure to curing light per day had showed that the interns have majorly been exposed to ‘more than 3 hours’ (35%) of curing light per day and undergraduate students have been exposed to ‘less than one hour’ (44%) of exposure to curing light. The P value = 0.000 (< 0.05) Hence, statistically significant. The correlation between year of study and the usage of protective eyewear during curing procedures resulted that the undergraduate student population (49%) have been more ignorant towards wearing protective eyewear during curing procedures when compared to the intern population (12%). The P value = 0.000 (< 0.05) Hence, statistically significant. Conclusion : Within the limits of the study, it was observed that the undergraduate dental students lacked awareness and were ignorant towards wearing protective eyewear during curing procedures when compared to that of the interns. Further studies and awareness based on the health hazards related with curing units is to be encouraged.
