摘要:Impaction of teeth is a condition wherein the tooth is confined to the bone and doesn't erupt, or partially erupts into the oral cavity, failing to reach a position apt for its functioning. There is a higher incidence of impaction in recent times, that too of newly erupting third molars, as the tooth is being put more and more in disuse, leading to its agenesis which is explained to be evolutionary. Impaction of teeth may cause pressure over the adjacent portion of the mandible predisposing it to fracturing, causing pain and neuralgia. The present study aimed to assess the incidence of horizontal type of impaction in patients who reported to a private dental hospital in Chennai. To assess the incidence of horizontal type of impaction in patients who reported to a private dental hospital in Chennai. Materials and Methods: The present retrospective study involved n=516, which was filtered based on the patients who reported with impacted third molars, and with proper records. The data was cross verified and compiled under the categories of age, gender, and type of impaction. A descriptive statistical analysis was performed using the SPSS software (version 23.0) and the results were then inferred. Results: It is inferred from the present study that most patients reporting with impacted teeth belong to the age group of 21-30 years (53.75%), Males were affected more (55.78%) than females (44.22%). Horizontal impaction (18.42%) was the least predominant type of impaction that occured. Correlating the type of diagnostic radiography used for the case and each type of impaction, it was observed that 25.83% of horizontally impacted teeth required OPGs for diagnosis over IOPAs (3.88%). Pearsons’s Chi-square test showed p=0.113 (p>0.05) indicating no significance of the result. Furthermore, analysing which type of anesthesia was most resorted to, for extracting horizontally impacted teeth showed local anesthesia to be preferred (28.74%) over general anesthesia (0.97%). Pearsons’s Chi-square test showed p=0.115 (p>0.05) indicating no significance of the result. Conclusion: It can be concluded from the study that there is a greater prevalence of impacted third molars among those aged 21-30 years (53.20%), predominantly males (56.70%), with the second most common type of impaction to be horizontal impaction (29.71%) over the other types. Moreover, the procedure preferably requires the OPG as a diagnostic tool (25.83%), prior to the surgery and is done mostly under local anesthesia (28.74%).
