摘要：AIM: Dry socket is one among the foremost common complications following adult tooth extraction, especially mandibular third molar. Management remains controversial and different authors have shown different results with the utilization of zinc oxide eugenol. Propolis may be a resinous substance obtained from the beehives that has antioxidant, anti-bacteria, anti-virus, antifungal, anti-tumor and anti-inflammatory activity. The target of this study is to work out the incidence, possible risk factors and compare the effectiveness of two agents (Propolis and zinc oxide eugenol) for the management of alveolitis. MATERIALS AND METHORDS: 28 alveolitis patients were randomly divided into two groups. Various risk factors were recorded through proper history. After thorough irrigation with normal saline, propolis mixed with absorbable gelatin sponge was placed in one group whereas zinc oxide eugenol was placed in another group. Intensity of pain was recorded on a visible analogue scale of zero to ten. Pain score was recorded at the time of diagnosis, thirty and sixty minutes after placement of medication and on the second, fifth, seventh and tenth day. the info was collected and analyzed using SPPS software (version 20). RESULT: Incidence of alveolitis was 4.70 percent, more common among males (57.49%). It had been more common after extraction of the mandibular third molar (60.9%). Initial and final pain relief as per recorded on the visual analog scale was better with the utilization of propolis as compared to flowers of zinc eugenol. CONCLUSION: It was concluded that the utilization of propolis is simpler in management of alveolitis for early and late pain relief and patient comfort as compared to the traditional medicament flowers of zinc eugenol.
