  • 摘要:Background: Respiratory dysfunction has been recognized in children with Down Syndrome (DS). This study aimed to examine the outcome of adding motorized movement therapy to the rehabilitation program versus conventional chest physical therapy only on pulmonary functions and exercise endurance in children with DS. Methods: This is a randomized controlled trial involving 40 children (aged 9 to 13 years) with DS. the study arm received conventional chest physiotherapy plus aerobic exercise with a motorized movement therapy device. The control arm received conventional chest physical therapy only. The rehabilitation program included three sessions weekly for 12 weeks for both groups. Spirometry and six-minutes walking distance (6MWD) were recorded at baseline, six weeks, 12 weeks. Results: We found significant improvement of pulmonary function parameters and 6MWD in both groups at week six as well as at week 12 however, the difference was statistically insignificant between the two groups. Conclusions: Adding aerobic exercise to conventional chest physiotherapy effectively improves pulmonary functions and six minutes walking distance in children with Down syndrome but is not superior to conventional chest physiotherapy alone.
