摘要:Contemporary dentistry has evolved in terms of digitization and is advancing towards computer-aided design/computer-aided manufacturing (CAD/CAM) technology. CAD/CAM technology in dentistry was introduced in the mid-1980s. Fabrication of CAD/CAM restoration is as both chairside and chair side-laboratory integrated. There have been various new developments in dental materials and engineering in the past 20 years which has led to the success of CAD/CAM technology. Knowledge in accordance with the technology has helped us to plot and build 3D models, supported virtual prototypes with the assistance of a computer numerical control (CNC) device. Computers can now be accustomed to create accurately detailed projects which will be assessed from different perspectives in a very process referred to as computer aided design (CAD). To materialize virtual objects using CAD, a computer- aided manufacturing (CAM) process has been developed. CAM operates employing a machine connected to a computer to convert a virtual file into a true object. CAD/CAM technology employs a non-invasive three-dimensional(3D) imaging system. In this article we try to summarize some important and basic information about the uses of CAD/CAM technology generally and specially in the field of Prosthodontic dentistry.
