摘要:Background: Geriatric dental education is the predoctoral dental curriculum that deals with special knowledge, attitude, and technical skills required in provision of oral health care to older adults. To develop competency in managing geriatric patients, dental students must undergo educational experiences that result in development of special clinical skills and a caring attitude toward the elderly. Thus, this study aims to assess the perceived barriers and attitude of dental students towards geriatric dental care in chennai Materials and methods: This survey was conducted using a pre-validated, self administered questionnaire. The questionnaire was administered to 100 undergraduate and postgraduate dental students through google forms. Collected data was analyzed using SPSS software 23.0 Results: Of 100 dental students, 54% were males and 46% were females. Among those, 37% were undergraduates and 63% were postgraduates. About 69% of postgraduate students were receiving training in the provision of dental care for geriatric subjects. The primary barrier to providing dental care to the elderly included insufficient knowledge of geriatric dental care, perceived lack of communication skills and self-confidence in managing elderly patients. Conclusion: The study results conclude the positive attitudes of postgraduate students toward geriatric patients. Only postgraduate students are receiving training in the provision of dental care for geriatric subjects. Undergraduate students even though they are willing to give geriatric dental care, the lack of knowledge in giving care was one of the observed barriers.
