摘要:Childhood obesity is a global phenomenon that affects all socio-economic groups, irrespective of age, sex or ethnicity. Obesity is due to the excess accumulation of body fat that has adverse health effects. It is defined by (BMI) Body Mass Index. Childhood obesity and related metabolic complications is rapidly emerging as one of the greatest global challenges of the 21st century. The complications can be of short term and long term. About 110 million children are now classified as overweight or obese. In children the overweight state is generally caused by a lack of physical activity, unhealthy eating patterns resulting in excess energy intake. Obesity increases the likelihood of various diseases mainly cardiovascular diseases, type 2 diseases, obstructive sleep apnea, cancer, osteoarthritis and depression.This study was an online questionnaire survey. 10 questions were formatted on the topic obesity, its awareness and knowledge. 100 children participated and their responses were recorded. The responses were examined and shown as pie charts. This study concludes that obesity is prevalent among primary school children in Madurai district.
