  • 摘要:Human identification is one of the most difficult subjects that humanity has ever faced . Forensic dental identification entails assessing an individual's gender, age, cultural background, community, and so on . When it's impossible to identify a person based on fingerprints or dental records due to traffic accidents, acts of terrorism, or mass disasters, palatine rugae can help.Anthropometry, fingerprints, dental records, gender determination, age estimation, weighing, identifying by specific traits, and blood-group differentiation are some of the conventional methods for human identification . Fingerprints are the most accurate method of identification, followed by dental records.Although the use of teeth in forensic investigations is well-documented, additional methods such as palatal rugae patterns, lip prints, and bite marks have also been observed. For individual identification in medico-legal investigations, palatal rugae are considered to be equivalent to fingerprints and bite marks. Palatal rugae, also known as transverse palatine folds, are asymmetrical and uneven elevations of the mucosa in the anterior portion of the palate that run transversely from the palatine raphae in the midsagittal plane. The rugae are insulated from heat by the tongue and buccal pad of fat because of their internal position in the head, which protects them from trauma.Palatal rugoscopy, or the study of palatal rugae, can be employed in circumstances where fingerprints are absent, such as decomposed and burned bodies. The goal of our research was to see if the palatal rugae pattern might be used to help with sex identification in the South Indian population.
