摘要：General health of an individual is a factor of Oral Health and oral health is much more significant in the elderly. Dementia is a debilitating neurological condition. Hence in the present study we aimed to assess the quality of life specifically related to oral health in patients with dementia in geriatric population of India. Materials and Methods: We piloted a cross sectional observational study among 200 patients of both genders and were 60 and above in age, who were diagnosed with the dementia. We estimated the “oral health Impact Profile-14 (OHIP-14)” and the “Geriatric/General Oral Health Assessment Index (GOHAI)” among them based on a questionnaire. The data thus collected was evaluated for significant values using the Kruskal–Wallis and Mann–Whitney U tests and the p<0.05 was considered as significant. Results: We observed that the mean age was 73 years, with slightly female predominance. Significant variation was seen for both the OHIP-14 and GOHAI, for the age, gender, chewing ability, dentures, and the self-rated oral health. The maximum response percentage was seen for the pain and discomfort and the functional disability for the GOHAI where as for the OHIP-14 the maximum response percentage was seen for the Psychological impacts. Conclusions: Oral health conditions deteriorated with the age as the dementia progressed. There were significant lower scores for both the OHIP-14 and GOHAI indicated a poor oral health condition in the patients with dementia.
