摘要:The fourth largest behavioural risk factor contributing to ill health and mortality is the Physical inactivity . The number of adults who are physically inactive is on the rise in many countries, influencing the prevalence of noncommunicablediseases and the general health of the global population.Smartphone apps are being recognised as a potential and promising approach to increase adherence to physical activity guidelines. The aim of this study is to assess whether smartphone applications have an impact on physical activity among college students. MATERIALS AND METHODS:An online survey consisting of about 10 questions was distributed to 100 college students. The questions mainly focused on their normal physical activity, whether they have an app for fitness tracking and on whether they feel it has improved their physical activity. About 39% of the participants reported that they do about 30 minutes of exercise daily while 41% reported that they do about an hour worth of exercise normally. 12% reported that they do approximately 1 to 1.5 hours of exercise and 8 % report that they do upto two hours of exercise. 91% of the participants responded that they have a fitness app in their smartphone that they use regularly. When asked why they use the app, 35% responded that it’s for calorie counting, while 37% responded that they keep track of their nutrition with the apps and some responded that they seek exercise guidance from the app. Smartphones can be one of many potential tools that can help boost Physical activity in Youngsters and there is a positive correlation between fitness apps and Physical activity. CONCLUSION: While smartphones are usually perceived as the bane of Physical exercise, we can use it to promote it as well.
