摘要:This paper will consider Matsumoto Seicho’s depiction of the Japanese court system in his legal mysteries. Instead of representing the legal process as a “peripheral consideration,” Matsumoto’s work attempts to depict the “true nature” of court cases as they relate to society as a whole. Court cases are thought to revolve around verifiable facts. However, Matsumoto’s narratives focus less on facts and more on the relationship of the legal system with society. By depicting examples of admission of guilt and perjury, he demonstrates how the true motives behind a crime are secondary to the mass media’s reporting of cases, the linguistic space of the courts, and deficiencies in the legal system. Furthermore, the inner workings of human beings—which cannot be expressed in the language of the law—are expressed here in the language of literature. The psychologies of the parties involved are not easily observed in the court room, but are illustrated with sensitivity through Matsumoto’s literary approach.
