摘要:A blood smear, which is also referred to as a peripheral smear for Blood cell morphology, is an important test for evaluation of blood-related problems, which are present in red blood cells, white blood cells, or platelets. The peripheral blood film (PBF) is a laboratory test that involves cytology of peripheral blood cells which is smeared on a glass slide. Very basic test but importance in investigation of various clinical diseases is invaluable. It has a wide range of uses, including distinguishing viral infections from bacterial infections, evaluating anemia, looking for causes of jaundice, and even diagnosing malaria. In addition to information about the different types of blood cells, a blood smear (especially when combined with a reticulocyte count) can often be a good measure of how well the bone marrow is functioning. This article highlights the basic technique and science behind the PBF. It expounds its laboratory applications, clinical indications and interpretations in the light of various clinical diseases. Despite advances in haematology automation, unlike other automated tests (such as a CBC), a technician or healthcare provider looks at a blood smear under the microscope in order to detect a wide range of changes that give clues to underlying diseases. For diagnosis of any pathology, there must be the triad of clinical history, physical examination and laboratory investigations. Approximately 70% of clinical diagnosis and treatment decisions are assisted by laboratory medicine.
