摘要：The use of the word "tell" to describe a settlement mound is so intimately associated with western Asia that its transfer to West Africa may seem inappropriate. But the mounds of Mali are true tells, and their excavation is beginning to reveal a hitherto unsuspected history of pre-Islamic urban development in the Middle Niger Valley.
