The Shimane University Medical Library published a book titled “Hanaokaryu Ijutsu No Sekai” in March 2008. This book is about the “Oomori Bunko” collection that we hold, which includes a number of old books concerning Seishu Hanaoka. In the latter period of the Edo era, Doctors in Izumono-kuni (Izumo District in Japan) visited Seishu Hanaoka at “Shunrin-Ken” in Wakayama, where he lived and treated many patients, mainly those suffering from breast cancer. This publishing project was the first for our library, and was completed in collaboration with the publisher “One Line” in Izumo City. During negotiations with multiple suppliers, “One Line” approved the idea of the university and undertook the publication. Because considering buying a publication is a demanding task, tenacious negotiations were required on numerous occasions. With the promise that the university would proactively undertake sales promotion for the book, an agreement was reached and the contract for publication of the book concluded. We constituted an editing and publishing committee for this publication. Initially, the date of publication was November 2007, however, because of delays in manuscript presentation, the publication was delayed until March, 2008. We successfully accomplished the publication owing to the cooperation extended by the medical library staff.
