    In order to examine the crack initiation and propagation characteristics separately of the steel prestrained at the atmospheric temperature, double impact tests have been carried out, and the quantitative analysis of the energies for the crack initiation and propagation have been made, as a result of which it has been clarified that crack initiation characteristics are deteriorated to a great extent as compared with the crack propagation characteristics. The author proposed the method to estimate the crack arresting transition temperature of the steel prestrained at the atomspheric temperature from the propagation energy transition temperature.
