It was studied how the rate of a stepwise oxidation of latent image silver clusters in redox buffer solutions (Ag n +Oxid.→Ag n -1+Ag++Red.) depended on redox potential and Br- ion concentration of the buffers while keeping thermodynamic driving force for the oxidation invariable. It was concluded that as the size of Ag n increased the rate-determining process for the stepwise oxidation gradually shifted from electron transfer process to silver ion elimination process.
