For these several years, the author has often been asked why people are not satisfied with the image quality of hardcopy produced from electronic image data which can display on CRT a soft image of quality level well accepted by its viewers. The present paper has been written to answer the above question by comparing the psychological attitudes of the viewers to moving and still images. From such comparison, the uniqueness of still images in the form of so-called hardcopy which consists of flexible, light-reflective support such as paper and which is exceptionally friendly to the viewer is concluded in that they impose the least restriction on viewing conditions including viewing distance, angles of viewing as well as of illumination, posture, duration, time, and place for viewing, etc. Cares for comparing different information media are also discussed.
