In order to elucidate photo-fading mechanisms of azomethine dyes forming color photographic images, identification of products in degassed solutions of model magenta dyes-carbonyl compounds (CCPD)-alcohols by photo-excitation of CCPD with near ultraviolet rays was made. The used dyes were 3-methyl-1-phenyl-4-(p-diethylamino-phenyl)-imino-2-pyrazoline-5-one (Magenta Dye 1) and 1, 3-diphenyl-4-(p-diethylamino-phenyl)-imino-2-pyrazoline-5-one (Magneta Dye 2). The products were separated throughout in a vacuum system, and NMR and mass spectra were measured. The products were identified as leuco forms of the dyes. Moreover it was confirmed that the leuco form of Magenta Dye 1 was 3-methyl-1-phenyl-4-(p-diethylamino-phenyl)-amino-3-pyrazoline-5-one and the leuco form of Magneta Dye 2 was 1, 3-diphenyl-4-(p-diethylamino-phenyl)-amino-3-pyrazoline-5-one. These results are consistent with and support strongly the previously published mechanisms in which ketyl radicals of CCPD initiate reduction of the dyes.
