Use and sales of methyl bromide, which was used for cultural properties protection, have been prohibited since 2005 because the methyl bromide was specified as the destructive material of the ozone layer. In this paper, the influence ofthe fumigation on several types of photographic images and their long-term stability was examined using the alternativefumigants (propylene oxide, ethylene oxide, methyl iodide, and sulfuryl fiuoride) as well as carbon dioxide andprohibited methyl bromide. We applied accelerated ageing experiments to the fumigated samples to estimate thestability in the long-term preservation. Methyl iodide and bromide were found to react to colloidal silver, though noeffect on silver images was observed. We observed no influence on photographic images in the other treatments.
