Torsional strength of a container ship with extremely large hatch openings is a very important problem for structural design of these types of ships, and recently the active researches have been initiated in many countries all over the world. Several reports have been already published in this country. To be paralleled with the full-scale torsional testing of a newly-built container ship, overall finite element analysis on the torsional strength of the same ship has been recently carried out. The comparative study on the numerical results and test data has duly proved high potentialities of the finite element methods in ship structural analysis.
